made by the Post Offices of Great Britain and the United States; but the correspondence conveyed in them is very trifling, only five Letters and eight Papers having been sent from Hong Kong, and no mails having been received from London, during the four-months the plan has been in operation.
2. The mails dispatched from the Colony contain correspondence originating in it, for Yokohama, San Francisco and the United States generally, and also such as may be received from Canton, Swatow, Amoy and Foochow; upon all such correspondence the whole revenue is retained by the Colony, whilst it delivers the letters received, at the places named without charge, thus avoiding the necessity for keeping postal accounts between the two Post Offices.
3. It will however be obvious that letters might advantageously, both as regards time, and possibly, at less than the present rates of postage, be exchanged by this line.
